It was a frightening storm through the night. Winds and rain whipped our canvas roof and we watched the lightening light up the sky all around us and felt thunder boom so loud that it shook our bed.
You can't see it, but the lightening lit up the clouds in the sky! We would have been washed away if we were in our tent so we were VERY happy to have this covered wagon for shelter and safety.
Our less than optimal training caught up with us and we were muscle tired enough to know our legs needed a recovery day before we carried on. And so we slept in…until 9am! Granted, we did not sleep well through the night with the thunder booms jolting us awake too often.
We stayed in the campground all day.
Starting with breakfast at our picnic table, followed by hours of re-mapping our route and making a few reservations ahead. Since we are taking this extra layover day, we had to re-plan. While sitting the shade at a picnic table, the campground owner, Kevin, rolled up in his golf cart to check on us after what he called an unusual “pop up” storm and to see how we faired in the covered wagon.
We learned that he is a retired police officer, Kevin, who was looking for something to do during “retirement”. He bought the campground 8 years ago when it was run down and owned by a friendly, but much older gentleman and his wife who couldn’t keep up with the maintenance. He reminded me a bit of me and Doug when we said “yes” to buying and operating the Bellingham Training & Tennis Club. Kevin has turned this place around - it is clean, modern in its facilities, and well cared for. There are plenty of pull-through spots for big RVs and a nice field with electricity for tent camping. The 2 covered wagons were an addition this year and we wish him much success.
During our day…
Of course we spent a little time at the pool
and are looking forward to a competitive game of cribbage later today.
We’ll be up early tomorrow - may the winds be at our back! Ready to ride with rested legs.
Tonight's dinner- pork chops, mashed potato's, and salad. All under Doug's chef mastery with one pot! He was mid-chew when I took the picture- sorry Doug!
