Does Knee Pain Keep you From Doing the Things You Love?

CAN YOU DANCE WITHOUT YOUR KNEES?

Do you like to dance?  That might be one of the things I miss the most.  Sure, I’ll do it once and awhile because dancing is simply joyous and liberating.  But not great for knees that are already painful…

Unhealthy Knees ARE A Barrier to an Active Life...BUT there is a way around it.

Each day we place enormous demands upon our knees.  And those demands grow exponentially as your activity level increases. Knees take the brunt of much of our active fun! If we take care of them, they will take care of us. But if we don’t take care of our knees, or maybe we've had an injury or suffer from arthritis, they hurt, and we won’t feel much like moving around. It’s like someone took our knees and replaced them with squeaky, rusty, painful, hard-to-move hinges, right?

You probably know many people with a variety of reasons why their knees (and other parts of their bodies) hurt. Years of lack of use, excess use, abuse, and neglect can render once strong and healthy knees into a set of “rusty, squeeky hinges.” The initial causes of knee pain are many and familiar—a sports injury with difficult rehab; too little time to maintain fitness because of (name the excuse) job, family, life; gaining excess weight and feeling the strain of carrying it through the knees; a misstep, “I just twisted it funny”; and just simple abuse (“Sure, I can jump that”).

We all know the story (which many of us share): our knees start to hurt, our favorite activity becomes painful, so we do less. As we do less, our knees lose strength and stability, and hurt even more, so we do less. As we do less, we gain some weight, and the knees hurt even more, so we do less. This negative feedback loop may take either months or years to evolve. But before we know it, our knees hurt so much that there are few activities we they can do that are even relatively pleasant or pain free.  Is that where you are now or are you afraid of going there?  I know I am.

When you get the wake-up call to get back into fitness, those creaky, cranky, crunchy, and painful knees might say NO. No to each and every exercise that everyone else is doing and seems like it would be fun and necessary to get fit again—no running, no tennis, no basketball, no soccer, no hiking, no golf, no to much walking.  NO…EVEN TO JUMPING JACKS.

Do you feel like each time you try, the pain from your knees prevents you from having fun? And so your effort is defeated from the outset.  You are not alone!  Knee pain is the most common joint complaint.

But I’m here to tell you that there is hope!  With a background of severe knee problems since birth, eight knee surgeries (I still have my “own” knees), I’ve figured out the formula to stay healthy and fit and I want to share that with you.  Non-impact movement is good and acts as a lubricant for your knees.

I have three keys to reducing my knee pain and I want to share them with you.
